I'm a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I have been programming
for over 13 years and designing web pages for 9 years. My web design experience includes work with these languages/utilities:
HTML (4.01 Specification)
Dynamic HTML (DHTML)
JavaScript
CGI Script
Perl
ASP
PHP
MySQL
Server Side Includes (SSI)
Macromedia Flash 5
Adobe Photoshop 7.0
MGI PhotoSuite 4
Many designers are not yet broken of old habits. Certain tags in HTML 3.0 Specification are being deprecated (i.e. <font>, <center>). Future versions of browsers will be built to newer specifications, and may not be able to interpret these older tags. The HTML markups I produce are 4.01 compliant and use cascading style sheets rather than the older outdated tags.
I prefer to code all websites by hand, using a simple text editor and a few text manipulation programs I've written in Visual Basic. I find web design software (like Frontpage) to provide very cookie-cutter looking sites with limitations on customizing.
Through years of experience, I've learned many important aspects of site development. A good website:
is easy to read,
loads quickly,
provides all the information a viewer is looking for in an organized manner,
and may be accessed by users of any browser or resolution.
As long as these rules are followed, any website will be a success.
